Some basic tenets
- Translation is a real-
life skill. - At some point, all students practice translation, regardless of what the teacher does.
- Translation helps develop reading skills.
- Translation is a conscious process of learning. Translation is a communicative activity.
- Translation is a useful evaluative technique.
- Translation is a valuable resource. Not to use it would be extremely wasteful.
We cannot banish translation from the ELT classroom for the simple reason that all learners are to some degree translators. Adult students of English learn largely by translating what they read and hear into their own language, regardless of what the teacher does. Apart from absolute beginners, all students are familiar with at least two languages and quickly become accustomed to negotiating meaning between them…
